For this course to go ahead a minimum of
5 attendees are required.
- Age Restrictions:
This practical awareness course gives learners the knowledge needed to select, inspect, position and use ladders and stepladders safely. It is suitable for employees, contractors and supervisors carrying out or managing low-risk, short-duration work at height.
The course is aligned with the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and current HSE ladder guidance. It explains when ladders are an appropriate choice, how ladder work should be planned and how to reduce the risk of falls, dropped objects and equipment failure.
- Learning Outcomes:
A range of subjects are covered including:

Understanding legal duties and the avoid, prevent and minimise hierarchy for work at height.

Recognising when ladders and stepladders are suitable for low-risk, short-duration work.

Selecting the correct type, length and load rating for the task and working environment.

Completing pre-use checks, identifying defects and understanding formal inspection requirements.

Positioning and securing ladders safely, including access ladders and the 1-in-4 angle rule.

Maintaining three points of contact, preventing overreaching and using tools and materials safely.

- Assessment Information:
Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning and a short multiple-choice paper. There is no formal grading; learners pass or are referred.
- Certification:
A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be arranged in line with the employer’s risk assessment, procedures and any changes to equipment or working methods.
