- Age Restrictions:
This awareness course helps learners recognise the hazards associated with abrasive wheels and understand the controls needed for safe selection, inspection, use, storage and handling. It is suitable for employees, supervisors and others who work near or may be required to use grinding and cutting equipment.
Abrasive wheels can cause serious injury through wheel breakage, contact with moving parts, ejected material, sparks, fire, dust, noise and vibration. This course introduces the principles of safe use and the duties placed on employers and users by the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and related workplace safety requirements.
- Learning Outcomes:
A range of subjects are covered including:

Understanding abrasive wheels, common wheel and machine types, typical applications and the importance of following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Recognising the main hazards including wheel breakage, entanglement, contact, flying particles, sparks and fire, dust, noise, hand-arm vibration and poor ergonomics.

Understanding legal responsibilities under PUWER and the need for suitable risk assessment, competent instruction, training, supervision, maintenance and inspection.

Selecting a suitable wheel for the machine and task by checking wheel type, dimensions, material compatibility, maximum operating speed and any use or storage limitations.

Completing pre-use checks for damage, contamination, correct fitting, guards, handles, work rests, flanges, power leads, controls and the condition of the work area.

Applying safe operating practices including securing the workpiece, maintaining a stable position, controlling sparks, allowing the wheel to reach speed and avoiding excessive pressure or misuse.

Using guards, local exhaust ventilation, screens and suitable PPE or RPE while understanding that personal protective equipment does not replace effective engineering controls.

Safely storing, transporting and handling wheels, isolating defective equipment, reporting damage and understanding that mounting or changing wheels requires appropriate task-specific competence.
- Assessment Information:
Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning and completion of a short knowledge check. There is no formal grading; learners pass or are referred.
- Certification:
A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be considered when equipment, duties, risk controls, workplace procedures or recognised guidance change.
