- Age Restrictions:
This qualification is regulated in the UK and awarded by First Aid Awards. FAA are an Awarding Organisation regulated by Ofqual and the qualification sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). The FAA Forestry First Aid qualification is designed to accompany a First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work qualification and meets the requirements of the Forestry Commission First Aid at Work Policy.
This qualification has been designed to provide the knowledge and competence for a learner to deal with emergency first aid situations in a forestry/agricultural environment and covers the recommended topics stated in the Forestry Commission First Aid policy 2015.
- Learning Outcomes:
A range of subjects is covered including:
• Be able to conduct a secondary survey.
• Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints.
• Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness.
• Know how to deal with a first aid emergency remote from medical assistance.
• Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with catastrophic bleeding.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with a crush injury.
• Know how to provide first aid to a casualty suffering from the effects of extreme cold.
• Know how to provide first aid for a casualty suffering from Lyme disease.
- Additional Information:
Head to toe survey – must be conducted on a casualty with a continually monitored or protected airway e.g., a responsive casualty or a casualty placed in the recovery position.
Recognise – to include signs and/or symptoms of the condition and/or where appropriate, mechanism of injury.
Administer first aid – provide appropriate help to a casualty, manage the situation and seek appropriate assistance when necessary.
Head injury – includes concussion, compression and skull fracture. The learner is not expected to differentiate between these conditions.
Asthma attack – may include assisting a casualty to use a spacer device and to take their own inhaler.
Diabetic emergency – should focus on the condition of hypoglycaemia.
- Assessment Information:
The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration, oral questioning, and written assessment. A learner must successfully pass both the written and practical assessments to achieve the qualification. There is no grading of the assessment,
learners pass or are referred.
- Certification:
Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, learners will be awarded an accredited Level 3 certificate in First Aid at Work + Forestry. The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive that the learner attends annual refresher training.
