This practical course gives learners the knowledge and confidence to identify workplace hazards, evaluate risk and select proportionate controls. Learners complete a straightforward risk assessment based on a realistic workplace activity.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers and the self-employed to complete suitable and sufficient assessments of risks to employees and others who may be affected. The course follows the HSE risk-management process: identify hazards, assess the risks, control the risks, record the findings and review the controls.
A range of subjects are covered including:
Understanding the purpose and benefits of risk assessment, the legal duties that apply and the difference between a hazard and a risk.
Identifying hazards through workplace observation, task analysis, consultation, incident and near-miss information, instructions and safety data.
Deciding who may be harmed and how, including employees, contractors, visitors, members of the public and people who may require additional consideration.
Evaluating likelihood and severity, considering existing controls and using a simple risk-rating method without overcomplicating the assessment.
Applying the hierarchy of control and principles of prevention to eliminate hazards or reduce risk to a level that is as low as reasonably practicable.
Recording significant findings, assigning actions and timescales, communicating the assessment, monitoring controls and reviewing after change, incident or new information.
Completing a practical risk assessment for a realistic workplace activity and discussing the suitability of the proposed control measures.
Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning and completion of the practical risk-assessment exercise.
A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be considered when responsibilities, workplace activities, legal requirements or organisational procedures change.
