This practical course helps learners prevent and respond safely to minor workplace spills. It covers initial assessment, personal safety, containment, spill-kit selection, clean-up, waste handling and reporting, with clear limits on when to withdraw and escalate.
The course reflects current HSE guidance on emergency arrangements and spill control, COSHH duties where hazardous substances are involved, and good environmental practice. It is intended for staff who may deal with minor, known spills under their organisation’s procedures. Unknown, large, highly hazardous or uncontrolled releases require isolation and escalation to emergency or specialist support.
A range of subjects are covered including:
Understanding how spills occur, their potential effects on people, premises, business continuity and the environment, and practical prevention measures.
Assessing the scene before taking action, identifying the substance from labels, safety data sheets and the site spill plan, and recognising when to withdraw or escalate.
Raising the alarm, securing the area, protecting drains and stopping the source only where this can be done safely.
Selecting suitable PPE and spill-kit materials for water-based chemicals, oils and fuels, including the limitations and incompatibilities of absorbents and neutralisers.
Using socks, booms, pads, granules and drain covers in a safe sequence to contain, recover, clean and, where required, decontaminate the affected area.
Segregating and labelling contaminated waste, completing incident reports, replenishing spill kits and applying learning through a practical spill-response exercise.
Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning, a practical spill-response scenario and a short knowledge check. There is no formal grading; learners pass or are referred.
A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be arranged in line with the employer’s risk assessment, spill procedures, materials stored and any changes to equipment or working methods.
