COSHH Awareness

Training Course
This is a half-day classroom-based awareness course with interactive activities. No previous experience is necessary.
A recommended maximum of 16 learners supports effective discussion and participation.
Learners should be at least 16 years of age.
Completion of the course does not by itself confirm competence to complete COSHH assessments; employers remain responsible for appointing competent persons and providing suitable information, instruction, training and supervision.

This practical awareness course helps learners recognise substances hazardous to health, understand how exposure can occur and follow suitable workplace controls. It is appropriate for employees, contractors and supervisors who use, handle or may encounter hazardous substances at work.

The course is aligned with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, as amended, and current HSE guidance. It explains how hazardous substances can cause ill health and the practical measures used to prevent or adequately control exposure.

A range of subjects are covered including:

  • Understanding COSHH responsibilities and why hazardous substances must be properly managed.

  • Recognising hazardous substances, including chemicals, products, dusts, fumes, vapours, mists, gases and biological agents.

  • Interpreting product labels, hazard pictograms and the key information contained in safety data sheets.

  • Understanding routes of exposure and the difference between immediate and long-term health effects.

  • Following the COSHH assessment process and applying control measures, including substitution, engineering controls, safe systems of work and PPE or RPE.

  • Safe handling, storage, spill response, emergency arrangements, reporting and the role of health surveillance where required.

Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning and a short multiple-choice paper. There is no formal grading; learners pass or are referred.

A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be arranged in line with the employer’s risk assessment, procedures, substances used and any changes to control measures or working methods.
