Training Course

This is a half-day classroom-based course including discussion, workplace examples, and a short knowledge check. No previous experience is necessary.

A maximum of 16 learners is recommended to support discussion and participation.

Learners should normally be at least 16 years of age.

This awareness course does not by itself qualify a learner to act as an infection prevention and control specialist, undertake clinical procedures, or manage an outbreak. Employers must provide task-specific instruction, supervision, and competent support where required.

This awareness course helps learners understand how infections spread and how consistent precautions can protect employees, service users, visitors, and the wider community. It covers practical infection prevention measures that can be applied across care, education, leisure, hospitality, and general workplace settings.

Infectious agents may be transmitted through direct or indirect contact, droplets, airborne particles, contaminated equipment, food, water, blood, or other body fluids. This course introduces standard infection control precautions and the legal duty to assess and control exposure to biological agents, helping staff apply safe and consistent working practices.

A range of subjects are covered including:

Understanding common infectious agents, the chain of infection, sources of contamination, and routes of transmission including contact, droplet, airborne, and blood or body-fluid exposure.
Recognising individual and workplace factors that can increase risk, including vulnerable people, poor ventilation, crowding, inadequate facilities, damaged skin, and unsafe working practices.
Applying standard infection control precautions consistently, whether or not infection is known to be present, and understanding when additional transmission-based precautions may be required.
Performing effective hand hygiene, selecting the correct method, understanding when soap and water is essential, and recognising that gloves do not replace hand cleaning.
Using personal protective equipment appropriately, including risk-based selection, limitations, correct putting on and removal, changing between tasks, and safe disposal.
Following respiratory and cough hygiene, safe handling of sharps, and procedures for blood or body-fluid exposure, spill response, first aid, reporting, and follow-up.
Safely managing the environment, reusable equipment, laundry, and waste, including the difference between cleaning and disinfection and the importance of correct products, dilution, and contact time.
Understanding risk assessment, COSHH duties for biological agents, vaccination where appropriate, illness reporting, outbreak escalation, record keeping, and compliance with workplace policies.

Assessment is ongoing through learner participation, questioning, and completion of a short knowledge check. There is no formal grading; learners pass or are referred.

A certificate of attendance is issued on successful completion. Refresher training should be considered when duties, infection risks, workplace procedures, or recognised guidance change.
